Program Description
Administration
The South Dakota Regional Infant & Child Mortality Review Committee
(RICMC) was established in 1997. It has an annual budget of $1,800.
Funding for the program is year-to-year. The program does not have any
staff positions. It is housed out of LCM Pathologists.
Teams
South Dakota has two regional teams.
Regional
Teams:
Teams conduct retrospective/periodic reviews.
Reviews
South Dakota teams review all infant and child deaths from post
delivery hospital discharge to age 18 years.
Purpose
The purpose of the child mortality review in South Dakota is
prevention.
Data
Standardized data reporting forms are completed for all reviews. The
RICMC has access to state vital statistics.
Annual Report
South Dakota does produce an annual report. This report is a summary
that is presented to the public via a press conference. Individual
reports are sent to county commissions and area hospitals. The report
is also published in the state medical journal.
Prevention Initiatives
Team findings have
influenced policy changes in the state. Local communities have
initiated “Back to Sleep” campaigns and neonatal MCAD screening
initiatives. Team findings have motivated prevention activities such as
life saving equipment being installed at a local river park.

South Dakota does not have any protocols in place.
