Plenary: Building Bridges to Prevent Child Deaths and Injuries: Why Should it Matter and How Can it be Done?

Dr. Fowler is a nurse epidemiologist and core faculty member of the Mid-Atlantic Public Health Training Center and the Center for Injury Research and Policy, has conducted research into traumatic brain injury in children; child pedestrian injury; psycho-social outcomes from bicycle-related head injury in children; recreational injury; penetrating eye injury; and outcomes from maxillo-facial injury. Currently she is engaged in design and evaluation of community efforts to reduce home injury risk, and sleep environment-related death in infants.
Dr. Fowler, who serves as Faculty Director for the Johns Hopkins Summer Institute "Principles and Practice of Injury Prevention", is an active injury prevention practitioner and licensed Child Passenger Safety Technician and directs an injury prevention program in a local health department. She serves on the National Advisory Committee for Child Death Review, the Maryland Injury Prevention Partnership Advisory Board, and chairs the Baltimore County Child Death Review Team. Dr. Fowler, former chairperson of the Advisory Committee for Injury Prevention and Control at CDC, now serves as Co-Chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at CDC.

Timothy E. Corden, MD is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Associate Director of the Pediatric Critical Care Unit at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. He is the Co-Director of the Policy Core at the Injury Research Center. Dr. Corden chairs the legislative committee of the Wisconsin American Academy of Pediatrics and has partnered with legislators on multiple legislative bills including the recently passed Child Passenger Safety law. As Co-Director of the IRC Policy Core, Dr. Corden uses his clinical experience and policy background to help guide the Core in its efforts to use policy as a tool to reduce the burden of injury and to educate future and current healthcare professionals on the importance of bringing their skills to the policy process in their communities.

Mary Wakefield serves as Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) She earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Mary in Bismarck and master's and doctoral degrees in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Wakefield joined HRSA from the University of North Dakota (UND), where she was associate dean for rural health at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, a tenured professor, and director of the university's Center for Rural Health.
In the 1990s, she served as chief of staff to two North Dakota senators: Kent Conrad (D) and Quentin Burdick (D). She also has served as director of the Center for Health Policy, Research and Ethics at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., and worked on site as a consultant to the World Health Organization's Global Programme on AIDS in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Wakefield is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and was elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies in 2004. In addition, she has served on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, as chair of the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, as a member of President Clinton's Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Health Care Industry, and as a member of the National Advisory Committee to HRSA's Office of Rural Health Policy.
